Lake Michigan Ice Break-up #1

from $100.00
  • Painting Location: Lake Michigan

  • Material: Oil on canvas

  • Original Size: 44” X 84”

  • Gifted to Bob Sutherland; No prints available.

On a sunny yet cold March day, I hiked the Empire Bluffs Trail in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. The air was still, creating an eerie silence. Halfway to the Lake Michigan overlook, I heard an unusual sound coming from the lake. Upon reaching the bluff, I discovered the source—massive, flat sheets of ice slowly colliding as they fractured and drifted apart. The movement of the ice resembled a slow, deliberate dance. These immense sheets had formed overnight, only to begin breaking apart the following evening. It was a mesmerizing, rare sight—one I had never witnessed before.

I gifted this painting to Bob Sutherland, founder and owner of Cherry Republic Inc. in Glen Arbor, Michigan. It was featured in the 2013 Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park exhibition at the Dennos Museum in Traverse City, Michigan. After the show, I offered the painting to Bob as a gesture of appreciation for his generosity, as he consistently donates to charitable causes.

Bob was thrilled by the offer, as this piece was his favorite in the exhibition. It symbolized his long-held dream of walking across the ice from the mainland to South Manitou Island. The ice breakup depicted in the painting occurred in 2009, and I completed the artwork in 2013. That same year, when Bob accepted the painting in the fall, his dream became a reality—Lake Michigan froze completely, allowing him to make the difficult trek to South Manitou Island and back across the ice.
